In 2015, Anna and her brother Will had a light bulb moment when they stopped and looked at the amount of coffee grounds they were throwing away each morning. “We spoke to local cafés and businesses and quickly established that tonnes of coffee grounds were ending up in landfill. Aware of the amazing benefits coffee has on the skin, we decided to create UpCircle”. The UpCircle team currently collect 350kg of fresh coffee grounds each day from more than 100 partners across London and turn them into handmade scrubs and serums. “To give you an example, the leftover grounds of three espressos go into making one of our facial scrubs,” they explain. “In our soap bars we use residual chai tea spices that smell amazing as the core natural fragrance".

I wanted to create a brand that would help to shake off that reputation”. Anna and Will estimate that over the next five years they’ll save 1,000 tonnes of coffee from landfills. Keep in mind that’s only one of the ingredients they use – talk about making an impact!
