The same way you wouldn’t put your blush on before your foundation, it’s important to know that your skincare has its own hierarchy to follow. Ready to double-check your routine?

After carefully curating a selection of the best skincare products in the world suitable for your skin type – if you ask us – the worse case scenario would be finding out you haven’t been reaping any of the benefits of their magical ingredients because you’ve been applying your products in the wrong order, preventing them from doing their jobs. [GASP!]

Here’s a glimpse of what happens when you apply products out of turn, you’re likely face a few problems: the formulas may not have the chance to penetrate your skin if a richer product is applied before a thin or water-based product or oil, effectiveness of the active ingredients may be significantly lower or cause an unwanted chemical reaction when applied too close to other active ingredients, or you could ultimately harm your skin by creating new issues due to a lack of water reaching your skin.

To take the guessing out of the game, remember these three general rules:

  1. Always apply the lightest, thinnest texture first and gradually continue to introduce heavier formulas.
  2. Have you ever tried to mix water and oil? They just don’t go together, right? The same applies here, when it comes to your beauty regime. Begin with water-based products before introducing any oils on top.
  3. Beauty boils down to science. If your routine includes products with active ingredients, considering pH levels is crucial. Acidic products should always be applied before neutral products – meaning, start with the lowest pH and go higher. However, if your line up includes various active ingredients with a gap of more than 1.0 to 2.0 in pH levels, allow your skin to rest before applying the next product to allow each one to work its magic. For a much more simple approach, break up active ingredients by using one in the morning and the other in the evening.

To summarise, serums – specifically water-based ones – go on first. Next up, facial oil, topped off with your moisturiser. Lastly, a high SPF (+30) during the day will do the trick as your final step! Remember, your morning routine should set you up to protect your skin, and your evening routine is your prime time to treat and repair.
