Fighting off more than the common cold and boosting immunity from the inside out, vitamin C has become known as one of the superheroes of skincare – along with hyaluronic acid, SPF and retinol. Read on to find out why your skin needs vitamin C and where to begin

What are the benefits of vitamin C?

No anti-ageing routine is complete without the addition of a vitamin C serum. With promises of healthier, illuminating, brighter and smoother skin, the benefits of vitamin C are multifaceted. This is truly one of the few skincare ingredients that works for all skin types. It is one of the most potent antioxidants protecting the skin from free radical damage from things like UV and pollution. If that weren’t enough already, it also stimulates collagen production, and works to lift away dark spots, all in all, evening out your skin tone, as well as smoothing fine lines and wrinkles over time. Umm, hello magic ingredient, where have you been all our lives?

When to apply it:

Vitamin C serums are best applied in the morning so that they can really work their magic in protecting your skin against harmful free radicals throughout the day (but hold your horses – this does not replace your SPF). As a potent multitasking ingredient, there’s technically no wrong or right time of day when it comes to application. So, you can also add it to your nightly routine.

What percentage to look for:

Proven to be active from as little as 0.6%, logic applies that the higher the number, the more potent the formula. With an increase in concentration you can also expect a significant difference in sensitivity. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to stick to a lower percentage of around 5% – this amount should be plenty to protect your skin and reap the benefits. On the other hand, a concentration of up to 20% will benefit those concerned with pigmentation.

If ever you’re in doubt, it’s best to follow the rule of thumb to start low and go slow until you’ve found a formula that works for you.
