Sustainable skincare routine? Check. Reusable muslin cloths and cotton pads? Check. Recycling your empties? Send help… Despite our environmental efforts, 45% of make-up wearers still don't know that you can recycle your beauty products, and 42% wouldn't even know where to start.
Altering our beauty habits to consciously shop cleaner ingredients, plastic-free packaging and ethically-sourced formulas is a great start. Yet there’s still more to be done, ladies – firstly, stop throwing that vegan foundation or coral reef-friendly SPF straight in the bin. Pretty please.
According to a campaign by Zero Waste Week, more than 120 billion units of packaging are produced globally every year by the cosmetics industry alone, most of which comes in non-recyclable packaging. Here’s what you can recycle at home to help.
Hairdryers – take to a recycling centre
Plastic bottles – as long as they have one of the recyclable plastic symbols on the back, they can be put in your normal recycling bin. Remember to remove the plastic cap, and wash and dry, too
Cans – both steel or aluminium types are recyclable, and brands are using both materials more and more to create more sustainable products #YAY. Just make sure the can is completely empty and detach any removable parts
Glass bottles – glass is recyclable, but make sure to remove any plastic components like the pump, label or lid
Mascara – whereas mascara tubes are often made from recyclable material, the wand itself isn’t typically recyclable, however, they can be donated to animal sanctuaries.
Foundation bottles – don’t forget that pumps are not recyclable. If the bottle is glass you can recycle it, but #OBVS make sure you've washed and dried it first
Makeup palettes – most contain magnets and mirrors which sadly aren't recyclable, so these parts need to be disposed of separately
Make-up wipes – unless labelled as biodegradable, makeup wipes are not recyclable. Consider buying reusable makeup pads or cotton pads instead
Nail varnish bottles – due to the hazardous toxins found in nail varnish, the glass bottles are not recyclable, even when thoroughly rinsed. So make sure you don’t throw these in with your recycling as they will cause the whole
Make-up brushes – neither animal hair nor vegan brushes can be recycled ATM, so make sure you invest in sustainable brands that will stand the test of time
