Whether your current skin care routine is a quick wash and moisturiser before bed or a full 10-step Korean skin care regime – we cast no judgements. But, one thing that’s for certain is that spending time at the sink prepping your skin before bed is crucial to keeping your skin looking as radiant as the day you were born. Now, experts suggest that adding a few minutes more to thoroughly wash your face with a double cleanse is twice as nice, rather than hastily moving onto your serums and moisturisers.
It turns out that one swipe of micellar water simply isn’t enough to remove a days worth of pore-clogging build up from make-up and debris. Who would have thunk it? Airborne bacteria and pollution are finding their way onto your skin and if you’re not pulling out all of the stops to wash them away, the long-term results are ageing, pigmentation and breakouts; not exactly the kind of look we’re going for, and we’re just going to risk being wrong by assuming you feel the same way. So, what’s the best way to avoid these issues? Double cleansing.
Simply put, double cleansing involves the use of two different types of cleansers, back-to-back. Typically speaking, the first step includes a pure oil cleanser or cleansing balm followed by a water-soluble cream or gel that’s suitable for your skin type. Alternatively, swap a pure oil cleanser by double cleansing first with micellar water and finish with your water-soluble cream or gel. The idea is to dislodge both your make-up and build up of pollution particles, which is why this routine is best followed and more necessary in the evening rather than the morning.
The first step of double cleansing is there to remove your sunscreen and make-up, clearing the way for your regular cleanser to do its job in thoroughly washing your skin. The cleaner your skin, the better the canvas for the products you apply after cleansing to penetrate deeper and do their job more effectively.
Pro tip: If you have acne prone skin or you tend to get oily half way through the day, double cleansing is certainly for you and will benefit your skin type. On the other hand, if you do not have oily skin and you’re typically feeling quite dry by the end of the day, double cleansing isn’t absolutely necessary unless you have a lot of make-up to remove.
