Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, they’re flooded with DIY hacks on how to get the best looking skin at home without purchasing any formulated products, and the advice is coming from every direction – but that doesn't mean you should follow along

People report wonders from using DIY hacks like lemon juice and toothpaste for common skin problems such as acne bumps and dark spots. But in reality, these hacks may cause more long-term harm than benefits because they’re breaking down your skin barrier and mode of protection.

Myth busters:

Lemon juice: It may have citric acid, which brightens and lightens skin, however, its far too acidic and can cause dark spots to appear after sun exposure and dry out and irritate your skin.

Baking soda: At a pH level of 8, baking soda will stress your skin, significantly decrease your skin’s water content, and cause dry skin.

Garlic: In raw form, garlic can cause skin allergies, eczema, skin inflammation, and watery blisters.

Toothpaste: The ingredients in toothpaste may kill germs and absorb oil, but they can also dry out or irritate your skin.

Sugar: As an exfoliant, sugar is too harsh for the skin on your face.

While cost-effective and likely readily available at home, these ingredients aren’t formulated for your skin. Don’t be fooled, even if immediate side effects don’t happen, the unwanted and harmful aftermath can appear at a later date.

Why is it important to protect your skin barrier?

Your skin is made up of layers, each with its own job to protect your body. The outer most layer, called the stratum corneum, often described as a brick wall, is your skin barrier. Inside of these “bricks” is where karatin and natural moisturisers are housed. The lipid layer contains cholesterol, fatty acids and ceramides (aka the glue that holds our skin cells together and keep our skin barrier intact and healthy).

This incredible brick wall is literally keeping you alive and keeping the water inside your body locked in so that you remain hydrated. Without it, all sorts of harmful environmental toxins and pathogens could penetrate your skin and wreak havoc in your body. Most importantly, your skin barrier is essential for good health and needs to be protected in order to function properly.

How can you tell if your skin barrier is damaged?

When your skin barrier isn’t functioning properly, you’re more likely to develop the following skin symptoms and conditions:

  1. Dry, scaly skin
  2. Itchiness
  3. Rough or discolored patches
  4. Acne
  5. Sensitive or inflamed areas
  6. Bacterial, viral or fungal skin infections
